An End at last to War

My installation at the Studio Gallery, Worthing Museum, Sussex. Open 12-26th July, Tues - Sats, 10-5. Part of the SSP Group's 90th Anniversary Exhibition, including a wide variety of quality paintings.

One More Weekend

The exhibition of contemporary art at St. Laurence Church, Falmer Village South, just outside Brighton, is open Sunday May 18th, and next weekend May 24th and 25th, 11 - 5. The church has a lovely atmosphere and the little village around the duck pond is a tranquil space in a crazy world.

A Bird in the Hand - finished

This carving in lime wood has surprised me, I didn't really plan it and yet it seemed determined to exist on a very "real" level. The chunky lad has a pony tail. I have found out that geese are very compassionate birds. If one of them falls out of the flock during migration, another goose will join the injured one, and stay with it until it heals and is able to fly again, or dies. Only then will the rescuer goose rejoin the flock. No goose will ever be left alone.

New Work in Progress

I am currently working on a largish piece of lime. It's very pale wood, with  washes of darker browns. The grain is not so pronounced as in oak, but it is also less heavy to heave around on the workbench, since I have yet to locate a troupe of young men to assist! Lime was traditionally used for many figurative church carvings as it is great for detailed work. I have not yet got to that stage. I have become addicted to this piece, most of the rest of life seems a distraction, apart from swimming which keeps my shoulders mobile. I may call it "A Bird in the Hand".

Exhibition in 13th century Crypt

I am exhibiting with the SussexArtsCollective, from Sat 24th. August to Thursday 6th September,
at The Crypt Gallery, Church Street, Seaford, BN25 1HE.
The crypt has a lovely stone vaulted medieval undercroft, which is where my work will be.
Open daily 11 - 5pm. Refreshments served in aid of RNIB.
I shall be there all day Monday Sept. 2nd if you would like to meet up and look at the work together.

Totem pole finished!

A week before Xmas I finished the totem pole, and it was taken down to Cornwall. It was met there with delight. This was a large undertaking for me, physically large, complex design, and very detailed. A friend was looking at the photos recently and asked "Is it the best piece you've done?" and I suppose one always hopes that the piece you have just done, is your best piece. Until the next one comes along......

I am very much enjoying this work, a combination of meaningful faces and medeival style decorative carving: oak leaves, dormice and chiffchaffs....

When Tim, who is commissioning the totem pole, came to see the oak beam, I had shortlisted 15 or so images of faces that I would be happy to work from. I asked him to select his eight favourites. We discussed these, and the general layout of the faces amongst tendrils of oak leaves. I sketched my interpretations of these images, and organised the layout, which was a challenge as I can't see half of the beam without getting Mark, Luke, and John in again. I think they are still resting, and contemplating a return to Galillee.

And I have made a start this week, it's beautiful oak and though hard, is carving very well.

Wolf Panels

So, here are the wolf panels, part of the Jungle Book display for my forthcoming exhibition. They are carved on tall oak slabs. It's both exciting and a bit nerve-wracking, I haven't had a solo show for a few years, and am including some drawings and sketches, so I guess a crisis of confidence is allowed. But there's still a few things to organise, so I had better get on with them. Exhibition dates & times to follow soon...
